Cartagena de Indias, the crown jewel of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a city bursting with history, color, and legendary tales. Founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, it quickly became a treasure trove for Spanish riches—and an irresistible target for pirates.
And oh, the pirates came! The notorious Sir Francis Drake swaggered in during 1586, capturing the city and walking off with a hefty ransom in gold. Then, in 1697, French pirates led by Baron de Pointis stormed in, leaving chaos in their wake. But Cartagena wasn’t about to let its treasures—or its pride—go without a fight.
To protect itself, Cartagena became a fortress city, with mighty defenses like Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, considered the most formidable fortress in the Americas, and Las Murallas, the iconic walls that still embrace the city today. These forts stood as silent guardians against invaders, their construction a testament to Spanish engineering and Cartagena’s unyielding spirit.
The city’s greatest showdown came in 1741, when British Admiral Edward Vernon rolled up with an armada of over 180 ships and 27,000 men, ready to conquer. Enter Blas de Lezo, Cartagena’s one-eyed, one-armed, and one-legged hero. Outnumbered but unbroken, he masterminded one of the most epic defenses in history, sending the British fleet packing and earning Cartagena its legendary status as the city that couldn’t be tamed.
But Cartagena’s story doesn’t end there. During Colombia's struggle for independence, the city was taken back by the Spanish under Pablo Morillo, also known as "El Pacificador," in 1815. His siege was brutal, and Cartagena suffered greatly, but the city's resilience would shine once again as it emerged from the ashes, ready to reclaim its place in history.
Today, Cartagena’s old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is like stepping into a storybook. Its towering walls, vibrant colonial architecture, and cobblestone streets whisper tales of treasure, triumph, and adventure. So, whether you're strolling through its sunlit plazas, marveling at its mighty forts, or imagining pirates lurking in its turquoise waters, Cartagena is a city where history comes alive with every step.
